Academic Mentoring System for Undergraduate Students in the College of Materials Science and Engineering
Published:2021-02-17

To all departments and secondary units in the college,

Since the opening of the Huxi Campus, the first and second year undergraduates of the college have completed their academic tasks at the Huxi Campus according to the overall arrangement of the university. Some students (including the graduates of 2009) have reflected to varying degrees that their teachers have not communicated with them sufficiently, and that they expect to be in close contact with teachers. After the enlarged meeting of the college held on February 25, 2010, the College has decided to implement this academic tutor system for undergraduate students from this semester.

I. The main purpose of the academic tutor system

The purpose of the academic tutor system is to further strengthen the communication between professional teachers and freshman and sophomores, to help students realize the role transformation from high school students to college students as soon as possible, to cultivate students' learning and innovation ability, to enhance students' professional understanding, and to establish a good academic style.

II. Requirements for academic tutors

In principle, the academic tutors are either professors or associated professors of the college, as well as lecturers with doctoral degrees.

III. Responsibilities of academic tutors

In principle, each academic advisor is responsible for contacting 12-14 students. The mentors mainly introduce the majors to the students, inspire students' strong professional interest, cultivate students' research and innovation ability, and improve students' learning ability. Tutors are required to meet collectively with their students at least once a month, and the time for each exchange and guidance is no less than one hour. The specific time, place, manner and content of the meeting are determined by the tutors themselves in conjunction with the actual situation.

IV. Workload and Evaluation of Academic Tutors

The assessment of academic tutors' work is conducted by the college at the end of each semester, mainly based on students' evaluation and tutors' records, focusing on the teachers' work responsibility and attitude. The workload and evaluation performance of academic tutors are included in the assessment of teachers' overall work performance in the college.

V. Job Requirements

1. It is the duty and obligation of in-service teachers to guide students' academic development. Teachers who are qualified to serve in the college must take the initiative to undertake the work of academic tutors. The list of academic tutors shall be collected by each department and submitted to the college for review and record.

2. The Student Office of the College is responsible for the daily management of the students contacted by the academic tutors and implement the list of students contacted by the tutors.

3. In the process of guiding students, the academic tutors can directly contact College Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs for necessary classrooms and other venues directly. Contact: Wang Youzhi, Tel: 13102335505, 65120780.

4. After the list of instructors and their students is determined by the college, in principle, tutors are not allowed to find other substitute tutors and the students are not allowed to change until the students finish their second year.

This notice will be implemented from the date of issue. It is hoped that all units will conscientiously organize and study the relevant requirements of the college, be responsible for notifying the tutors who have been arranged this semester to complete the corresponding work, and require the tutors to meet the students for the first time before the fifth week. Other matters not covered here shall be specifically coordinated by the college according to the situation.
