Evaluation Method of Undergraduate Teaching Quality in College of Materials Science and Engineering
Published:2021-02-08

Classroom teaching is essential for the college to carry out educational and teaching activities, as the quality of teaching directly affects the quality of talent cultivation. Active and effective teaching evaluation work can prevent and contain the teaching decline, promote the curriculum construction and ensure the teaching quality. The monitoring of teaching quality is based on the needs of the development of undergraduate teaching in our college. According to the current situation of teaching, it should be carried out in a timely manner, reflecting the characteristics of flexibility, pragmatism, pertinence and effectiveness, and adhering to the guiding ideology of "seeking pragmatism, finding gaps and seeing effectiveness". The evaluation of teachers' teaching quality aims to fully mobilize the enthusiasm of teachers and leaders at all levels, for the promotion of teaching quality and the optimization of the teaching organization, respectively.

The indexs of teaching quality evaluation are the criteria for teaching evaluation and the specific requirements for teachers' teaching, which should be carefully understood by the leaders and teachers of each department and institute, and eventually implemented in teaching practice. The participant students should also understand the process and methods of teaching evaluation and make evaluation of teaching based on facts. The evaluation can provide teachers with timely feedback on teaching evaluation information, draw teachers' attention, enhance their responsibility, stimulate their continuous improvement of teaching, and improve teaching quality.

The details of this method are formulated below, in order to strengthen the supervision and inspection of classroom teaching, and to promote the teaching quality.

(I) Evaluation index system

1. The evaluation system of teaching quality of teachers in College of Materials consists of three sections: students' evaluation of teaching, leadership teaching supervision group and teachers' peer evaluation, and teachers' self-evaluation.

2. The evaluation of each section is divided into six factors, namely, content, performance, teaching attitude, inspiring students, extra-curricular guidance and achievements. A number of questions were designed for each factor for the assessments. Each question adopts a 5-point system, which constitutes the evaluation table of teaching quality.

3. Calculation method of evaluation results

The weighted average of the three sections, namely, students' evaluation of teaching (M1), leaders, teaching supervision team and teachers' peer evaluation (M2), and teachers' self-evaluation (M3), is taken as the final score, i.e.

Evaluation final score = (M1) × 0.3 + (M2) × 0.5 + (M3) × 0.2

(II) The implementation method of evaluation

1. Scope of evaluation: teachers of undergraduate courses in our college.

2. Evaluation schedule: students' evaluation and teachers' self-evaluation will be conducted in the 16th to 17th week of each semester; leaders, teaching supervisory groups and teachers' peer evaluation can be arranged during the semester itself.

3. Evaluation methods.

(1) Students' evaluation of teaching

The Academic Affairs office of the college will send students the "Faculty Teaching Quality Evaluation Form (for students)". Students should fill in the form and submit it to the Academic Affairs office of the College before the 18th week of each semester.

(2) Faculty leaders, teaching supervisory group and teachers' peer evaluation of teaching

College leaders, teaching supervisory group and teachers' peer evaluation are required to attend classes randomly during the semester. Each teacher must be evaluated no less than 5 times and fill in the "Teaching Quality Evaluation Form for Teachers of College of Materials (for leaders, experts and peer teachers)" in time, and submit it to the Office of Academic Affairs of the College before the 18th week of each semester.

(3) Teachers' self-evaluation

The teachers in charge of the course will conduct self-evaluation of teaching quality based on facts. Fill out the "Faculty Teaching Quality Evaluation Form (for teachers' self-evaluation)" (see Annex III) and submit it to the Academic Affairs Office of the College before the 18th week of each semester.

(III) Useage of Evaluation Data

The evaluation data will be used as an important basis for the evaluation of teachers' merits, promotions and job appointments.

In addition, in order to further improve the teaching quality monitoring system, the college will hold various kinds of multi-level seminars from time to time to find out problems and solve them in time.
