Understanding Mg Corrosion

主讲人 : Professor Andrej Atrens

This talk reviews the important factors that control Mg corrosion. The starting point is that although much service experience of Mg could be described as “atmospheric corrosion” our understanding of atmospheric corrosion is not as good as we would like. Nevertheless, it is well established that “high purity” AZ91 has corrosion rates substantially lower than that of Al alloy 380 and steel. There is much research that has elucidated the factors controlling Mg corrosion in aggressive solutions like 3.5%NaCl, which have been used to simulate auto service. The factors are (i) Fe impurity concentration, (ii) second phases, (iii) single phase alloys, (iv) crystallographic orientation, and (v) surface films. If time permits, the talk will also address solution factors of importance to the understanding of in-vivo corrosion, and the mechanism & thermodynamics of Mg corrosion.
